Traffic is very chronic issue in Bali and if no urgent and comprehensive action taken, could destroy the island’s tourism industry. Unless the problem is arrested urgently, Bali risk losing its charm and the international tourist might easily turn to other destinations in neighboring countries. According to The Bali Times, Feb 25, thousands of foreign visitors lodge complaints againt the gridlock affecting the resort areas in south island.
The traffic congestion was so bad and uncontrollable and recurring almost hourly in the main streets. Our tourist guide always said “ kalau tidak macet kita boleh sampi dalam 15 menit tapi kalau macet perjalanan mungkin 45 menit.”
Vehicles ownership had surged in recent years at the same time the number of tourist arrival increased tremendously, whilst the length and size of the roan remained constant. The local authority is not keeping abreast with the situation. In recent years motor vehicles increased at a rate of 12% a year whilst road infrastructure has only been extended at a rate of 2.3%.
